The use of decentralised peripheral devices means taking advantage of the PROFIBUS technology, e.g.

connection between automation device and the dispersedly arranged process devices via one cable, the fieldbus
shifting of input and output modules for sensors and actuators to process
processing and transforming of process signals on site
continuous communication from process to control room via field bus
